The Mahabharata is not just a mythological tale, but the actual history of India. For centuries, scholars have been researching when the Mahabharata war was truly fought. In this quest, the name of Indian scientist and researcher Nilesh Nilkanth Oak stands out most prominently. Through his deep research, he has proposed a date for the Mahabharata that has astonished the world. According to Nilesh Oak's research, the Mahabharata war took place in 3067 BCE.
To arrive at this conclusion, Nilesh Oak did not rely on imaginary stories; instead, he completely utilized modern science and astronomy. In the Mahabharata text, Sage Vedavyas provided very detailed descriptions of the positions of planets, constellations, solar eclipses, and lunar eclipses at the time of the war. Nilesh Oak collected all these astronomical descriptions and fed them into modern planetarium software. With the help of this software, he simulated the sky thousands of years back in time to study its exact state.
The biggest and most infallible proof of his research is the 'Arundhati-Vasistha' observation. According to the laws of astronomy, the star Vasistha always moves ahead of the star Arundhati in the night sky. However, in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, Vyas Ji wrote that at that time, the star Arundhati was walking ahead of the star Vasistha. This was a very strange and rare astronomical phenomenon. When Nilesh Oak calculated this using the software, he found that in human history, this was possible only between 11091 BCE and 4508 BCE. Based on this, he proved that the Mahabharata war must have occurred before 4508 BCE.
Following this, he cross-referenced more than 100 other astronomical references recorded in the Mahabharata. These included the timing of Bhishma Pitamah leaving his body (Uttarayana), the eclipses during the war, and the retrograde motions of the planets. When all these pieces of evidence were linked together, only one exact date emerged—October 16, 3067 BCE. This was the very day the Mahabharata war began.
Nilesh Oak's research is highly significant because it refutes the claims of Western scholars who argued that the Mahabharata was an event from just 1000 or 1500 BCE. Oak's scientific evidence has proven that Indian civilization and its history are thousands of years old and immensely rich. His work places a strong scientific stamp of validation on the authenticity of ancient Indian texts.
